Ex1: I bought a chair – chair is a singular, countable noun

Ex2: The book i bought is interesting – book is again a singular, countable noun;

Ex3: I like the books you gave me – books is a plural noun. It is used in a definite sense

Ex4: I like flowers – flowers is a plural noun. It is used about flowers generally, not specific flowers, so it takes no article.

Ex5: Blood is thicker than water – blood and water are singular, uncountable nouns. They are

used in a general sense, therefore they do not need an article.

Definite article

  • the is used to denote a noun (before a singular or plural noun)

Ex1: I bought a chair last week. The chair is about trees. (You have just mentioned the chair, so you both know which one.) 

Ex2: We went to a wedding yesterday. The bride wore a lovely dress. (You have not mentioned the bride before, but you both know she is connected to the wedding.)

Indefinite article

  • a (before a singular noun beginning with a consonant sound)
  • an (before a singular noun beginning with a vowel sound -a,e,i,o,u)

Ex1: I bought a chair – we do not know which chair. 

Ex2: There is a animal outside – we do not know anything about the animal

Countable nouns – Countable noun refers to things that can be counted whether singular or plural.

Non-countable nouns – non-countable noun refers to objects that cannot be counted
